What’s the quickest way to make your political opinions count? Grab your phone and call your Representative and two Senators! Yes, going to their town hall is very effective, but calling all three EVERY DAY on a different issue adds up to a huge impact.
Why? Each day, your Members of Congress (MoCs) get tallies of the issues and stances constituents like you call about. Calling YOUR MoCS, whether to thank or disagree with them, is how you let them know what you want them to do. (Read this Indivisible article about why not to call MoCs who aren’t yours.)
It’s quick and easy
Find & save their contact info in your phone
Click here for your federal, state, and local representatives are, and their phone numbers. Or call the Capitol switchboard at (202) 224-3121; they’ll connect you to your MoC’s office.
Click here for your California representatives names & phone numbers.
Prep for your call
Decide what issue you’ll call about.
Click here for our list of resources to help you make calls, including info about pending issues and scripts.
Our top favorites:
Start dialing!
Tell them your name and zip code.
If you have a script from a source, personalize it—using your own words and story adds impact.
Does talking on the phone make you nervous? It gets easier the more you do it, but here are some tips:
Practice your script out loud before you call.
Call after hours and leave a voicemail. Or learn which MoCs rarely have staff answering the phones (lookin’ at you Senators Schiff and Padilla!)
Alternatives to calling
Advice is mixed about whether MoCs give emails sent via their website contact form as much weight as phone calls. (You can ask your MoCs’ staffers directly about this).
Indivisible has several email actions on their site like this one.
Another fantastic non-phone option is Resistbot, a chatbot that turns your texts into an email, fax, or postal mail—fast and easy!
The late Representative John Lewis said: "The vote is precious. It is the most powerful non-violent tool we have in a democratic society, and we must use it.” Calling your elected representatives to let them know your opinions is also an incredibly powerful non-violent tool, so please use it!
